DEMOCRACY
FOR SALE
From Washington DC to deepest Arkansas, lobby groups, corporations and billionaires are pouring millions of dollars in elections – legally. Private money without limits can be raised and spent since a very controversial decision by the Supreme Court in 2010. Two-thirds of Americans now say they are in favor of spending limits. Unsuccessfully so far, because political and private interests are so closely linked – and not only at the federal level. No law, thus no prosecution. But every day, incredible situations of conflict of interests undermine the confidence of the American people in democracy. For many, this is nothing less than corruption. A “legal corruption” that takes place right before their eyes, with total impunity.
